About The Practice

Bay Area Adult Therapy

Adult Therapy

Adults often come to see me when they are feeling stuck or going through a challenging life change or transition. Some people also come to therapy in crisis and/or in significant emotional distress, while others might be experiencing mild sadness, anxiety, or dissatisfaction. Regardless of what brings you to therapy, my main goal is to help you find short-term relief from your current symptoms and discomfort, while at the same time learn long-term strategies to overcome specific life challenges and better manage your emotional and mental well-being.

Whether you have been in therapy before or not, it takes a lot of foresight and courage to ask for help and seek professional support. Depending on your age, background, biology, and life experiences, many factors can be causing you to feel stuck. In my experience, it’s impossible to get unstuck without fully knowing or understanding what’s causing you distress and what techniques can help you get you to where you want to be.

At the beginning of therapy, I often explore with clients what has brought them to this point in their life. This might take the form of reflecting on one’s past in terms of childhood upbringing, trauma, relationships, and/or other experiences in their life.

I have found that even though past experience can greatly impact our current state-of-mind, this doesn’t mean that we cannot change who we are and how we react to life’s inevitable challenges. At the same time, it’s important to note that If we spend too much time in therapy processing and exploring the past, then this can keep us stuck–unable to move forward into action mode.

This is why I balance insight-oriented therapy with practical, evidence-based approaches. My goal as a therapist is not to keep you in therapy longer than you need to be. Most importantly, I want you to leave therapy feeling more self-sufficient and better equipped at expressing and managing your own feelings and behaviors so that you get more of what you want out of life.

As a trained Dialectical Behavioral Therapist (DBT) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapist (CBT) therapist, I utilize awareness, acceptance, and behavioral change skills to help clients meet their goals.

Some of the core skills I work on with clients during therapy include:

  • Mindfulness
  • Emotion and behavior regulation
  • Distress tolerance
  • Interpersonal effectiveness

Depending on how long it takes one to increase their confidence and mastery of these skill sets, the sooner one can apply these strategies outside of therapy.

Issues treated include:

  • Generalized Anxiety
  • Specific anxiety (e.g., social, work-related, perfectionism, procrastination)
  • Family issues
  • Major transitions (e.g. divorce, job change, retirement)
  • Depression
  • Parenting
  • Relationships
  • Loss/Grief
  • Anger
  • Eating & Body Image
  • Substance Abuse

“Courtney is an invaluable pillar of support. I’ve worked with Courtney for three years–both in person and over the phone—and from her excellent, multi-schooled therapy, enjoyed tremendous personal growth. Compassionate, patient, and knowledgeable, Courtney creates a safe space within every session. She’s expertly led me through days of anxiety and depression. And on days of calm, she’s helped me discover deeper aspects of myself. Courtney’s guidance and kindhearted insight have allowed me to become a more emotionally aware person. I’m deeply grateful for Courtney’s work, and would recommend her to anyone. She’s a phenomenal therapist.”
