“When I moved out of state for college, Courntey did not hesitate to switch to phone sessions to accommodate the move, and she always made it clear that, as a young adult who was now 18 years old, I got to decide what I wanted our work to look like. The work we did together, the lessons I learned and tools I accumulated in my toolbox, continue to govern how I deal with new situations, communicate with loved ones and, most importantly, how I communicate with myself in my own head.”
Teletherapy is therapy conducted via phone, computer, smartphone or tablet. Research has shown that teletherapy is as effective as in-person therapy. When doing Teletherapy my goal – just as in face-to-face therapy – is to help people gain greater insight into what’s causing them to feel distress, while developing healthier coping skills and promoting clear, empowered communication.
It is understandable that you might want to wait to start therapy in person. However, social distancing measures might go on for some time and it is unclear the extent to which this will be our new normal. Connecting with a therapist via phone or video is an easy way to get started with care and to receive consistent support toward your goals. During these stressful times, getting support soon for you or a member of your family is as important as ever.
